The ARRL VHF Contest kicks off this weekend. I am seeing today, (Saturday) a lot of 6 meter spots, it looks like the band is open. W1SIX, (Ernie), up in Haverhill, MA is spotting HI3TEJ on 50.090. A bunch of other long distance spots there too. Too bad I gotta miss this one.

For those of you who are new to 6 metes this time of year is usually the best time for 6 meter "E" skip. You may want to keep and ear out on the band this weekend. There could be some surprises.

GL.. Have fun... (Throw my call in for me once in a while... hi Tongue )

Well even though the tower is tipped over in the yard I had a "crazy idea" to see if I could play a little at least with the locals on 2 meters this weekend.

I took the 10 element 2 meter beam and spun it on the boom from vertical, (where it has to be in order to end of horizontal when I lift the tower), to horizontal with the ground. I also tipped it up to skitter it over the garage, Wilcox Tech and the mountain that is across the street from it on Oregon Road. I estimate it is sitting on a 30 to 35 degree angle up pointed at about 240 degrees. The back end (where the driven element is), is only about 3 feet above the ground. Puts it a little below West, gee if 2 meters opens to California I could possible work it, (GL on that happening).

So lets see what I can pick up on 2 SSB, CW or even digital this weekend, (though I think that I have not had much luck with the digital setup on that radio.). I'm listening on 144.220 SSB if someone wants to give me a rumble to see how I hear.

The two pictures attached should show what I did. This one is the way it should sit:

And here is the "great experiment", (to quote Captain Kirk of the Enterprise),

Wish me some kind of luck!

Good Luck Al!

6M is open and hot right now if you want to strap on a 6M aerial somehow!

Some 1-Landers making Martinique just now.

Looks like some trans-equatorial prop too.
Unfortunately I've got nothing that will work. 2 meters is the only option. I worked four stations with it. W1QK, FN31, K1WHS, FN43 (!), W2SZ FN32 and K1IIG FN31, been spinning the dial looking for other locals but no one else around. Radio is sitting on 144.200 USB if someone want's to call. Every once in a while I give the dial a spin. I've heard some weak signals but nothing I can pick out.

I should hear Meriden, Wallingford, Southington pretty good. The beam is pointed toward Cheshire.

K1VDF, K1BXC and I are on 144.203 and Dan is 57.
