Worked the ARRL 160m CW contest for a little bit this weekend. Getting better at CW, still have a long way to go to be a contributor on Field Day.

160m with your 95' end-fed? I didn't hear Europe, was happy to hear TN and NC. I copied LA (W1WMU) but I have to believe that was a bad copy on my part. Had fun.

Well...sort of. The end fed wouldnt load so I use a clip lead to attach the end fed to one side of the balun on my ladder line dipole (which is higher). With that kludge configuration I can now load on 160, 75, and 17 meters., loading it as "unbalanced." I get a higher noise level than a balanced antenna, but I can load and I do get out. I worked Guam and Suriname last week on 18 Mhz with this set up.

I didnt hear Europe (Croatia and Germany) until close to 2300L. I did hear people working EU earlier but couldnt hear them. I was happy to be able to reach across the Mississippi a few times, working Iowa, Minnesota and South Dakota and even heard faintly an XE station.

Its truly a "random" wire, with the other side being the counterpoise. Dont tell any antenna theorists, they will tell you it wont work, and why it wont work.

And also remember that in contests the boys with the big toys show up, making it somewhat easier to reach out with our unassuming low power stations.
