C5X - The Gambia
#1

C5X the Gambia is active from the 15th to the 26th of January on 10 through 160 SSB, CW, RTTY and some PSK31. This is a purely holiday style operation with daily uploads to Club Log and LBOTW. There are four British Hams using Elecraft K3 transceivers and KPA-500 amplifiers. Antennas are two Spiderbeams on the five HF bands and dipoles at good height for the lower bands.

Heard him for awhile on 15M, didn't have the time to break the pileup.

His strongest signals were on 12 and 17 meters. Grabbed him there and it did not take much to break the pileup. Outa there in about 15 minutes both times. I need to find him on RTTY someplace and then that one is done. Would imagine that he was pretty strong on 15 but didn't listen.

EP6 has had a terrible signal all day. Checked his spots out a couple of time and could not hear him to either 12, 15 or 17. Didn't check 20 that's probably a zoo. Need him on 15, 17 and RTTY.

A wise old sage, (oh I'm going to hear about THIS Big Grin ), K1WJL once told me that he likes to DX in the low sunspot years because when the band opens it's usually open just to you and you aren't fighting the rest of the world for the contact. I agree. Seems to be true.

I heard C5X on 15M S7-9 and EP6T S4 on 17M & 20M only for abt 20-40 minutes max.

C5X 20-30 minutes because I didn't have the time to wait out the pileup.

Also, EP6T is Operating under a Morals or Political Monitor. This is confirmed in a direct email from their NA Pilot who I've been conversing with.

This is nothing unusual. The last DXpedition here had the same restrictions. I believe a few other middle east and a couple of Africa and Asia countries also assign a monitor to the teams. Most teams report that the person usually just doesn't do to much except socialize with them and is usually fascinated by the operation.

FYI both teams have already confirmed on LBOTW.

Well Al, there's more there than meets the eye. If you follow, there's been heavy receive QRM, especially when working NA.

They call, NA, then quickly switch to EU.
You can't just say 'nothing unusual'. I call bullshit.

There is always some of that. It seems that ALL of the DXpeditions are getting QRM no matter where they go. I'm not sure why. It used to be just the big ones facing it but there is a group or bunch of individuals who are set against ruining the fun for everyone.

I do notice that as the DXpedition goes one it seems to die off though there is always a few and I think they are the "frustrated" ops who can't seem to make it in the log. Those are the ones who make the "poor Op" comments on the cluster.

The C5 has had some but not as much as the EP6. Keep at it though you should find and opening and a time when there is no or minimal QRM.
