Volunteers Needed!
#1
Public service events (PSEs) provide us the opportunity to test our gear, capabilities, and practice our skills in a typically low stress environment as we prepare for unexpected emergencies. These events are also a public demonstration of our value to the community and our willingness to help in times of need.

Welcome Spring 2014 PSE busy season.
- Your participation makes our ability to support these events possible
- Your involvement is appreciated on more than just one level
- Don't wait for "the other guy" to do it

2014 Fishbien/YMCA Community Day and Road Race
Saturday September 20th

We are looking for 12 amateur radio operators to support this event. This gives our club another opportunity to provide a visible and valuable service to the Wallingford community.

Bring your VHF/UHF "Go Box".
Due to the local topography, a plain stock vanilla 5 watt HT with its original factory antenna may not be able to effectively communicate across the entire course.

Suggested Equipment Options:
1) An HT with an aftermarket BIGGER ANTENNA.
2) An HT with a mag mount antenna on the vehicle
3) A mobile radio and antenna on the vehicle (fixed or mag mount).

DRESS CODE: Casual. If you have any amatuer radio emergency service gear (hats, vests, tshirts, etc), please wear them to increase awareness for amateur radio. You may also wear radio club shirts, hats, etc.

SCHEDULE of EVENTS
0730: Arrive at YMCA
(Pick up your assignment information, Stop Watch, Enjoy a coffee and donut.)
0745: Briefing (Mandatory)
0750: Deploy to your assigned location
0830: Starter's Gun
1035(+/-): Return to YMCA, Turn in your Stop Watch, and get lunch (FREE FOOD!).

This Fishbien/YMCA Road Race is also has a "Community Day" at the town park across the street from the YMCA. It consists of FOOD, Family Games, Magic Show, Obstacle Course, Inflatables, Face Painting, and More.

THE "and MORE":
0805 - 1300 hrs: ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Service) Radio Tent
We also need a couple of volunteers to:
- Set-up an ARES HF Radio Tent
- Help the public to "Get On The Air" (GOTA)
- Talk to the public about Amateur Radio, ARES, and our local radio club
- Give out brochures.

Interested? GREAT!

I just took a look at the official web site for the Wlfd. YMCA 2014 road race.

Take a look at the links for the 5K and 10K race maps. Especially the 10k one. I think we need to get there pretty early, because those maps are pretty confusing ... at least they are to this old guy. This years maps are in my opinion the most confusing ones I've seen in many a year.

Here's a link to the site:

http://www.wallingfordymca.org/RoadRace.html

And if you can't find it here is a direct link to the 10K map.

It's a little confusing when looking at the 5k and 10k and trying to figure where each station is between the two. Almost like the stations 1, 2, 3 etc. in the 10k are not the same as stations 1, 2, 3 etc. in the 5K ?? Do we have two entirely different setups with different stations for each? In years past, the "stations" were always the same location for either race. One race doesn't even have a station 1, while the other does. At least I couldn't find it ??

Disagree Rich, the maps have been that bad since day one. Someone put a GPS rcvr on their pet squirrel while he collected acorns -- ergo the 10K map. Did it again on his spouse, -- ergo the 5K map.

They would be better to use my pappy's shout when i was bugging him "Go run around the block 8 times or 16 times (if he was really pissed)"
