Something I did not think of last night. Don't all those radios have to be Type Accepted before they can be used? I did not think you could just take any commercial radio and use it for ham bands with out the FCC Type Acceptance Certificate. This is what held up a least one "super" ham radio manufactured in Europe from going to market. Or am I missing something here?

We (Hams) have been converting commercial (and miliraty) gear for decades.
To 'Offer for sale", any transmitting equipment must be type certified for the 'market' they are offering to.
For commercial market (LMR, police etc.) this needs Part 90 certification and type acceptance. Same goes for Ham rigs and the specs in Part 97.
Once you take a commercial type accepted radio and bring it into the Part 97 realm, you just need to conform to the emissions requirements of our section of CFR Title 47, Part 97.

I thought last evenings DMR discussion was really informative. I'm going to wait by the sidelines on this one for a bit to see how the technology swings.

It will be interesting to see if the ham manufacturers decide to start producing equipment for DMR. I expect if anything it may be someone like the Chinese manufactures to who come out with the first equipment. Then if it catches on you may see Alinco and others start into it. I don't expect Yaesu or Kenwood to be the first. I think that they would want to see how it is received by the general population before sinking R&D into it.

This is similar to how Packet Radio started. For the first few years you had to build your own kit from TAPR, (my first TNC was a [I believe] a TAPR-2 kit), and then they started to produce fully assembled units. I remember that when TAPR introduced the the TAPR-2 it caused such a tie up of the phone lines and no one could get through that the phone company though their whole system crashed and they sent a team out to the switching site to see what broke. The phone system could not handle the in flux of calls. Probably the first "denial of service" problem long before the internet.

Finally MFJ and Kantronics saw that packet radio was catching on and they started to introduce their own TNCs. I think MFJ licensed the TNC design from TAPR.
