RE: January ARRL RTTY Roundup Scores - N1API - 01-08-2023

Well here are my results.   They were not what I had expected.   The bands seemed flat.   20 meters was not good at all.   10 was OK 15 was better.   I was unable to use 40 because of the RTTY RFI problem which also causes me problems on 20 when I point the beam in certain direction.  It drives me up a wall and I tried to chase it down today to no avail.   It just seems to happen when I am using N1MM.   When I use MMTTY I have no issues on 20 I believe.   I have not checked 40 meters.   It's frustrating and maybe someday I'll look at it.

It is also frustrating that new RTTY contesters don't know how to format their responses when they are calling CQ.   They use the form YOUR CALL - Their REPORT to you - Their Call.  The problem with this is that in RTTY many time the first characters get hit so you don't know who they are answering, so you sit and wait to see them answer again to pick up the call of the station they are answering.   They also don't put a <CR> before the call so everything is on the same line that is on your screen when you go into receive.   You may have half a line of random characters from noise on your screen before you see their response.  The correct response to answer a CQ is

LINE FEED
Your Call  Signal Report  Your Report (Sent Twice)  Your Call   (No OVER is needed)
Line FEED

You then give your response
Their Call  Your Report To Them (Sent Twice)   (No OVER is needed)

And they close with

LINE FEED
Your Call  TU-73 (or other greetingTheir Call   CQ Contest Name  (KKK OK here buy not necessary)
LINE FEED

In some case I use extra space to make sure that the software shifts back to letters and even extra line feeds.   Back in the day when mechanical printers were the norm people would not use a lot of line feeds so you did not waste the other stations paper, (how may times did someone find all their paper scrolled out if they ticked off another operator?)  But in today world extra spaces and line feeds just make for a clean response.  Of course you have to use the proper characters in your software but this is the correct way to answer a CQ.  That's my gripe for this contest.
