ARRL International CW DX Contest Results

Here are the results of my efforts this weekend. I did a few things beside the contest, some county hunting, a bit of 10-10ing Sunday, shoveling snow (ugh), (but not a lot of that.)

15 ------- 83 ----- 75
10 ------ 155 ----- 80
Score: 328,500

The bands were pretty good despite being in a solar lull. 10 meters opened late Saturday, but was nice Sunday. 20 meters was surprisingly good Friday evening at the opening of the contest. I was able to find and work, Japan, Antarctica, Madagascar, Asiatic Russia, South Sudan, Asiatic Turkey, and Iceland among others. I put about 57 Q's in the log and stopped about 0200 though the South Sudan station was worked at 0444.

I worked a number of 5 watt signals this weekend mostly from Europe. But I also worked OA8SS and this weekend he was running 5 watts. His signal on 10, 15 and 20 was 5X9 plus. I sent him an email and congratulated him on his excellent signal and thanked him for all the contest contacts through the years. I always seem to work him in the DX contests for my Peru multi.

I got a very nice email back. His name is Ed and he explained that he is running a TH7 antenna but about a half hour before the contest he discovered his TS-140S had no output on CW. SSB and AM are fine but nothing on CW. The next day about noon he turned the rig on again and found out that it was putting out about 1 Watt on CW. So he turned on his Drake LB4 amp and ended up with 5 watts out. So Ed made his first foray into QRP and was surprised that he was being heard and ended up with quite a respectable score.

Band QSOs Pts Sec
7 23 69 12
14 384 1152 53
21 221 663 41
28 446 1338 51
Total 1074 3222 157
Score: 505,854
1 Mult = 6.8 Q's

On the personal side Ed explained that he is a Jesuit Priest who has been in Peru for 47 years,. He teaches business ethics at a local university and is the author of three books on the subject, two which are text books.

It's always interesting to get these emails, this is one of the great things about Ham radio, getting to know a little more about the people you contact than just 5NN TU GL.

Hope you all got some time in this weekend. Please send in your results in and credit Meriden ARC as your club.
