ARRL CW DX Contest
#1

The ARRL CW DX Contest will be held February 15th and 16th 2014.

Full contest rules can be found at: http://www.arrl.org/arrl-dx

I would like to see more contest participation from the club members and scores submitted to credit Meriden ARC in the contests. I had been submitting crediting for YCCC but because I've never officially joined, in some contests my scores were not credited to the aggregate for YCCC but just left as "Independent". (Primarily the major CQ and ARRL Contests). So maybe it's time we all get back to doing a little, (as much as you can), contesting and submitting for Meriden ARC and showing in the Local Club category in the results.

One of my personal goals when running for office was to encourage more contesting from the local club members and having the scores credited to Meriden ARC.

I set up the details with the ARRL years ago. As an Affiliated Club, the are nine ARRL contests we can submit logs for --- this does NOT change your individual log, category, or score.

From the ARRL General Rules "8.1. There are nine ARRL-sponsored contests that are designated as Affiliated Club Competitions (ACC) for ARRL and RAC affiliated clubs:
8.1.1. January VHF Contest
8.1.2. RTTY Roundup (January)
8.1.3.(February and March) International DX Contest
8.1.4. June VHF Contest
8.1.5. August UHF Contest
8.1.6. September VHF Contest
8.1.7. November Sweepstakes
8.1.8. (December) 160-Meter Contest
8.1.9. (December) 10-Meter Contest"
I did the same with the CQ contests but not sure if they use the concept.

Most log programs allow for you to set up the Affiliated Club field as a default. Just do it once and you are all set.

Anyone need a vacation? W1MD is short of operators on PJ4 and is begging for company on 10 meters for the ARRL CW Test this weekend.

If you got nothing to do hop on a plane to Bonaire and go help him out!

Well, quite a weekend. The bands were nice. They did not close early like the last contest. In fact 20 meters was open the beginning of the contest and I spent the first 3 or so hours working EU, AF SA, PAC, AS, ZL and a few other. I put over 40 countries in the log on 20 meters before stopping for the night. It was about the best performance for me on a Friday night opening that I can remember. I had a little bit of an issue with the radio computer Saturday morning. It keep loosing the USB ports. I kept getting an error message about the AD Buffer being full, I'm not sure if that was the program or the computer and I had to reboot a couple of times but after it worked well. No real shocker contacts though I was pleased to be able to break into some of the pileups with the "big boys" on 20 meters. The HL from Korea was one and the TK from Corsica the other that were pretty well piled up. The TK took me about a half hour of work to break. I was fortunate to be the first on a few semi-rare ones and after I worked and spotted them stuck around for a few seconds to hear the whole world descend on the station I spotted.

I had a nice break Saturday afternoon from the contest. I had front a front row seat to see Rain at the Oakdale. The concert started a little after 2 PM, (delayed slightly because of the WX and people arriving late), and ended about 4:15. I was home by about 5 with delays due to the arriving snowstorm and got back on the air about 5:30, though I didn't put quite the effort in Saturday evening as I normally do. I quit about 9 PM to watch a DVD.

Anyway here is the damage.
